At last - an update! Just back from a medical meeting in Vancouver last weekend. What a great city, never enough time to sightsee and get all my continuing education credits, too. Sigh! I found the First Nation art to be very interesting, and did manage to find some lovely galleries around the convention center.

Of note: the Sedalia Spring Fiber Festival is May 15 (http://www.sedaliafiber.com/). I've been a couple of times, always a great selection of yarns, roving, etc.

Am posting a picture of a quilt from the past. I made this for my office, to show how bones change as kids grow. I cut the bony stencils myself and used puff paint to get the texture I wanted. I liked the bright colors with this, and the kids get a kick out of seeing the hands in a quilt after we have looked at an Xray of their own hands.

I am so pleased to report that this eveningI was awarded 2nd runner up at the Georgia Morgan Civic Art Show at the Lynchburg Art Club! My quilt, "Before the Battle: General Gilmer's Gettysburg Map" was selected from 149 entries, most of which were paintings. I am very honored and thrilled to pieces.

We were very fortunate this week to avoid getting an additional 2-6" of snow on top of what's already here. It was quite beautiful, but the last storm included a lot of ice and has really weighed down the trees.

I am including a link to a talk by Dr Bob Lustig, a pediatric endocrinologist at UCSF, on sugar and fructose. He believes (and I agree) that fructose is bad for you, and is a major contributor to the obesity epidemic.

Meanwhile, have been quilting on these snowy evenings. "Swirl" is my latest. In our Explorers group ( we meet monthly to explore surface design and mixed media), we used an idea by Anne Lullie on color exploration from the Oct/Nov issue of Quilting Arts Magazine. I started off small, then decided I needed more colors and values to make this work, then decided a larger project would work better.

Well! It's been a while! We had the opportunity to have a lovely Mediterranean cruise last month, had a great time and a lot of rainy days. Started in Istanbul, stopped in Izmir, Athens, Dubrovnik, several stops in Italy, and ended in Barcelona. Had never been to Barcelona before, it's a lovely city with great architecture. And we had a few sunny days there, which was great.

After we got back, I finished a quilt I started in a class with Judy Loope of Salem, VA. She does wonderful things with a soldering iron, and is a great teacher.

This is Daisy, one of our two cats. She is fascinated by the sewing machine, especially the up and down action of the needle. She is usually very busy, as compared to our other, Whitley, who is very mellow and likes best to sleep on a lap. Here, Daisy is helping me finish my newest quilt, based on coneflower hybrid colors.

Before my husband and I were adopted by Whitley, I had no idea how interesting, personable and lovable cats could be. We've both had dogs in the past, but no cats since we were kids ( and those were farm and ranch cats).

My quilting is a bit different when I'm hunched over Whitley, not very ergonomically correct!

January 6, 2009: Art Club Exhibit

The quilt show at the Lynchburg Art Club (http://www.lynchburgartclub.org/) seems to be a great success. I think this is a great step for the inclusion of fiber arts and artists into the Art Club. I have had so many favorable comments, emails and notes, and have a whole new appreciation for how meaningful and rewarding these are. Thus far, several quilts have sold, much to my amazement! How wonderful a start to the new year.

Merry Christmas!

I still get excited about Christmas, and hate to see it end. It's almost midnight now, and here I am posting a blog entry for the first time in about 6 months.

I am also excited about participating in an upcoming quilt exhibit here in Lynchburg, VA, at the Lynchburg Art Club Jan 2-11, 2009. There are four of us who are showing quilts: Jill Jensen, Ashley Scholer, Cindy Lacy, and me. The quilt shown, There's No Place Like Home, is one of my 14 that I will have there. Still have one to finish up, just working on the quilting.

I am very happy to report that my quilt, "Bones & Artichokes", has sold, and will remain at the Page-Walker Center in Cary, NC!

I have 2 more quilts on display at the Lynchburg Art Club, will add photos ASAP. These are my first quilts at the Art Club here, happy to contribute some fiber art, as most of the items they show are paintings. Lovely paintings!

This week, I had great news! This quilt, "Bones and Artichokes", was accepted into the ARTQUILTScultures exhibit at the Page-Walker Center in Cary, NC, Apr 25-May 28, 2008. This show is sponsored by the Professional Art Quilt Alliance-South.

This is my first entry into a juried show, and I am thrilled with its acceptance!

I made this quilt last year for our guild challenge. We were given 3 fabrics, and could add up to 2 more. The theme was growth. As a pediatric endocrinologist, I often evaluate children for growth disorders, and one of the tools I use is an Xray of the hand, called a "bone age". These three hands depict ages 2, 7, an 14 yrs.

Hands were stenciled with puff paint, also used raw edge applique. Machine quilted.

I traded this postcard for her postcard # 109 on the website; hers is even more beautiful in person than in the photo.

Mine is painted cheesecloth that I made in an online class with Sue Bleiweiss, then fused a layer of tulle, appliqued the painted, heat-distressed felt heart on, and added a few beads.

March 13, 2008: another quilt finished!

Finished my latest project last week, in time to get the photos done and mailed off to the Quilting Arts Magazine calendar contest. Theme was "celebrating home", and I made the quilt to show Dorothy's beaded red slippers on a background of applique'd tornado to whisk her back home to Kansas. My, that was a lot of beads! But I'm very pleased with how it turned out. Title: There's No Place Like Home.

I I I just got the photo uploading part! On the right is a concertina book that I made in Sue Bleiweiss' class. It's mulberry bark on black felt, with a layer of tulle over it.

The left is a bowl made of silk fibers, stiffened with Paverpol.
